Why Ginger Settles a Stomach

The simple mechanism behind a centuries old remedy

Ginger has settled stomachs for centuries. There is now a simple explanation for why: it speeds up how fast food actually moves through the stomach.

Empties faster, not slower

In a 2008 trial on healthy adults, ginger sped up how quickly the stomach emptied and made it contract more often. Those two things together are what ease that queasy, bloated feeling. A stomach that empties faster is a big part of why ginger is used for nausea, car rides included, and it is also why food moves through steadily instead of sitting heavy and causing bloating and gas.

This trial was conducted in humans, not dogs.
